Dear members and friends of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network
Welcome to our fourth e-bulletin. Our apologies for the delay in its sending – life has been busy at APAN!
Change to AGM – now 23 September in Adelaide
Firstly, an advance notice that our AGM has changed to Sunday September 23 at 9am in Adelaide (further details will follow). This will join APAN’s plans for a solidarity weekend with AFOPA’s BDS Symposium and the Edward Said Memorial Lecture. We hope many people can come to Adelaide to join in. See further down for more information.

APAN had a ten member delegation in Canberra last week, where we had discussions with 30 politicians (or advisors), as well as with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the UN Info Centre and the Palestinian Delegation. Included in our delegation was Avigail Abarbanel, editor of Beyond Tribal Loyalties. A full report will be on our website next week.
One of our meetings was with Foreign Minister Bob Carr. We indicated our disappointment with the Australian Government for its lack of support for Palestine, including its lacklustre comments about Israeli settlements. We also argued that the Australian mantra of ‘getting both sides to the table’ is problematic given the gross power differences between Israel and Palestine. Senator Carr stated that he believes Israel can only be secure alongside a Palestinian State and that the settlements are deeply problematic. We invite people to please comment on Senator Carr’s blog post on our meeting.
There were two excellent speeches given in the last sitting period in Canberra, and we commend them to you. They were from Senator Claire Moore about a relative of a Queensland man arbitrarily detained in Palestine and the hunger strikers and Senator Lee Rhiannon about Susyia, settlements, and the blockade of Gaza. Please pass on your thanks to Claire and Lee who work hard to support Palestine in the Australian Parliament.
In May some Liberal Senators also used Senate Estimates to attack Australian aid agencies working in Palestine, which were rebuffed by Senator Bob Carr.
