McCarthyism reborn: Australian universities capitulate to Israel lobby, suppress criticism of Israel
Universities Australia and its 39 universities have adopted a new definition of antisemitism that dangerously conflates criticism of Israel with discrimination against Jewish people. This move suppresses political dissent and solidarity with Palestine, shields Israel from accountability, and threatens academic freedom. Doctors have warned of rising child deaths due to lack of shelter and fuel, as Israel blocks the entry of tents, mobile homes and other aid, in direct contravention of the terms of the ceasefire.
Meanwhile, aid groups are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further deaths, as over 280,000 families remain homeless.
Record number of illegal Israeli outposts set up in West Bank in 2024
Under the cover of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, at least 60 illegal settler outposts – a record number – have been established in the occupied West Bank in 2024 alone, according to Israeli group Kerem Navot.
The group, which monitors Israeli land policy in the occupied West Bank, has warned that Israeli settlers are violently seizing Palestinian land, blocking roads and erecting fences that prevent Palestinians from accessing their fields – all in explicit violation of international law.
According to the UN, the past year has seen the largest displacement of Palestinians from the illegally occupied West Bank since the Naksa of 1967.
