In December APAN undertook our largest
lobbying effort yet, with 37 meetings spanning
elected representatives and Government Departments. We met with senior members of the four main political parties, including the Leader of the Opposition and the Shadow Foreign Affairs spokesperson.
We had conversations with many people who were passionately supportive of Palestine and those who were new to the issue. We also came across old myths about the conflict – including that settlements ‘only take up 3% of the land’ and that the Palestinians don’t recognise Israel.
Our delegation included APAN’s newest member, retired Major General Ian Gordon whose most recent posting was as head of the UN Truce Supervision Organization in the Middle East and who says he can no longer stay silent about the injustices against Palestinians. The delegation spoke about the need to call a spade a spade – or in this case to call settlements illegal; and raised our concerns about threats to withhold funding from any person or group who supports the BDS campaign.
