To establish an urgent parliamentary inquiry to inquire into the involvement of Australian nationals in the IDF’s operations in the OPT and to ask for an Australian Federal Police investigation of those individuals involved in the IDF’s offensive.
To the Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled: The petition of the undersigned shows:
The United Nations and its various bodies, and international human rights organisations, have all stated that the ongoing siege of Gaza and Israel’s actions in Gaza since October 7 2023, represent clear violations of international law, which could amount to war crimes; crimes against humanity; and genocide. These crimes are codified in Division 268 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code, meaning Australia has the jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute persons involved in their commission, regardless of their nationality or on the territory where the crime took place.
An undisclosed number of dual citizens of Australia and Israel were part of the over 360,000 reservists summoned by the Israel Defense Force (IDF) following the October 7 Hamas attack to “join the fight”. These reservists were subsequently flown, some individually and some via repatriation flights, to Israel to join the IDF’s attack on Gaza and throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Your petitioners ask that the Senate:
To establish an urgent parliamentary inquiry to inquire into the involvement of Australian nationals in the IDF’s operations in the OPT and to ask for an Australian Federal Police investigation of those individuals involved in the IDF’s offensive.
For the safety of Australia, we must ensure that we are committed to upholding our laws so that citizens alleged to be involved in the commission of grave crimes are investigated and prosecuted. Such an inquiry should request that Israel cooperate fully with the inquiry and any investigation.
