Tantura film screening (Maribyrnong Palestine Campaign)

August 15, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

This 2022 film tells the story of Tantura, a Palestinian village during the Arab-Israeli War in 1948. In May that year, up to 200 Palestinian villagers were massacred in Tantura by Zionist paramilitary. The victims buried in a mass grave.

The film begins with the story of Israeli researcher Teddy Katz. In 1998, Katz submitted his master’s thesis at Haifa University, focused on the Tantura massacre. Katz interviewed dozens of soldiers who had participated in the operation, as well as Palestinian survivors. Based on his findings, Katz concluded that in capturing Tantura, Israeli soldiers committed war crimes.

“Israeli soldiers had long denied killing prisoners after capturing an Arab seaside town, days after Israel’s creation. A new film provides fresh evidence — reopening a debate about Israel’s foundational story.”
— New York Times
