SUMMARY:Sydney launch and exhibition - The Wall of Tears
DESCRIPTION:The Sydney launch of the Wall of Tears is at 7pm\, Friday 9 October 2026\, at the Pitt St Uniting Church\, 264 Pitt St Sydney. Speakers are Chris Sidoti\, international law expert\, Dr Saira Hussain\, volunteer doctor in Gaza\, and Suzan Wahhad from Palestinian Christians in Australia. \nThe Wall of Tears will be on display until 28 October. Please check opening times on the attached flyer. \nThe Wall of Tears by American artist Phil Buehler\, is a heartbreaking memorial to 18\,457 children killed in Gaza. The installation lists the names of children in the order in which they were killed between October 2023 and July 2025. First is Wesam Iyad Mohammed Abu Fsaife\, a 14-year-old boy. Last is Sabah Omar Saad al-Masri\, an eight-year-old girl. \nThese names of two children mark the beginning and end of the Wall of Tears\, a massive art installation measuring 15m by 3m\, which was first unveiled in Brooklyn on 29 January this year\, marking the anniversary of the death of Hind Rajab. The memorial was brought to Western Australia by a group of local doctors keen for their community to bear witness and to remember these innocent children whose lives were cut short by conflict. \nThe rows and rows of names are punctuated by photos and stories of individual children\, drawing on reports by the Guardian and Washington Post newspapers. \n“If you approach from a distance\, it looks like almost an abstract painting and that draws people in to see\, what is that?” according to the artist Phil Buehler. “Then you’ll see they’re names of the children killed in Gaza since 7 October and there are thousands of them stretching down the block. \n“Then you’ll be drawn in further\, I hope\, to see the faces\, read the stories of some of the few dozen I’ve scattered throughout the fence. That’s the part that gets me when I look at it. You see these faces full of joy and hope\, snapshots from graduations and birthday parties and family gatherings and knowing that these kids’ lives were just cut short.” \nThe artist reflects: “You can’t not think about your own kids and your own families. I hope that might lead people to think about how they might help\, even if it’s just\, take a photo of the mural and pass it along on their social media or to their friends.” \nThis is a heartbreaking and powerful work that speaks to our shared humanity\, and we would be honoured to welcome you to experience it.

SUMMARY:The Inaugural Dr Adnan Al-Bursh Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with courageous healthcare workers\, brave voices\, and people standing up against oppression. \nProfessor Peter Macdonald is a world-renowned cardiologist. In September 2025\, he was suspended from St Vincents hospital at the urging of the Israel lobby\, after asking a question about the national intelligence agency of the State of Israel. In July 2026\, his lecture at the University of Melbourne was cancelled due to complaints from the Israel lobby. Hundreds of health professionals were denied an opportunity to learn from him. \nWe don’t require cowardly institutions to platform brave voices. Instead\, Prof. Mac has been invited to deliver the inaugural Dr Adnan Al-Bursh Memorial Lecture. Join us to learn about his extraordinary work with Indigenous communities\, alongside his groundbreaking work in heart transplantation and the developments that have shaped this field. \nThe lecture will be followed by a panel discussion about healthcare workers who have the courage to stand up against systems of oppression and the importance of speaking out when it matters most. Our panel will be chaired by Alice Eggleston and the panelists are: Dr. Ruth Mitchell\, Dr. Sarah Abdo and Nick Hanna. With featured speaker: Dr Nada Abu Alrub. \nThe Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh Memorial Lecture is intended to celebrate those who use their knowledge\, expertise and position to advocate for human dignity\, justice and freedom. \nAll proceeds from the evening will be donated to: \n\nPalestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF)\nthe Civil Liberties Defence Centre (founded by Nick Hanna)\nCondoblin Aboriginal Health Service\n\nWe’ve set the pricing modestly to make the event accessible so if you are able to donate to these wonderful organisations\, please do. \nCome along\, hear some brave voices\, meet others who believe. \nSpeakers Biographies\nProfessor Peter Macdonald AM is a world-renowned senior cardiologist specialising in heart transplants.\nProfessor Macdonald and his team pioneered a new method of heart transplantation that allows donor hearts that have stopped beating to be reactivated in a machine for up to 12 hours before transplant. Professor Macdonald is currently working on groundbreaking new research\, to preserve tissue following heart attacks and strokes. For the past 20 years\, Professor Macdonald has been going to Condoblin to volunteer at the Aboriginal Medical Centre\, providing medical services to the local Aboriginal community. \nDr. Ruth Mitchell is a neurosurgeon\, passionate medical educator\, and fierce advocate for global access to safe surgery\, peace\, security and equity. She chairs the board of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War\, and has provided leadership to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (Nobel Peace Prize 2017) since its inception in 2007. She served on a medical mission to Gaza earlier this year with the Palestinian Australian New Zealand Medical Association (PANZMA). \nNick Hanna is the principal of Hanna Legal and a co-founder of the Civil Liberties Defence Centre\, a community legal service founded in response to the unprecedented crackdown on political expression during the Gaza genocide. Since October 2023\, he has acted in numerous high-profile cases for Palestine defenders\, including healthcare workers.\nAside from the law\, Nick hosts The What & The Why\, an investigative journalism project exposing the role of the israel lobby in undermining democratic rights in Australia\, and he wrote and directed The Last Sky\, a bold documentary about israel’s attacks on Gaza and Lebanon and the people fighting back\, previously screened by TPAN. \nDr Sarah Abdo is an endocrinologist and Head of Department with extensive experience caring for vulnerable and diverse communities. Her work as a physician is grounded in advocacy\, with a strong commitment to health equity\, human rights and equitable access to healthcare for all communities. \nAlice Eggleston is a  long term union organiser\, branch presdent and workplace delegate for NSW Nurses and Midwives Association. She is currently campainging against AHPRA’s adoption of the IHRA definiton of antisemitism. \nDr Nada Abu Alrub is an Australian humanitarian doctor of Palestinian and Iranian hertitage. Her Australian journey began in Sydney\, where she worked at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for six years. She has dedicated her work to caring for patients and defending their human rights. From war zones in Gaza and Palestinian and Syrian refugee camps in Jordan to rural Australia and Torres Strait Islander medical centres\, her work embodies the heart of medicine: humanity\, dignity and the courage to stand with those who need us most. \nCivil Liberties Defence Centre:\nCLDC is a community legal service dedicated to promoting and protecting Civil and Political Rights\, especially freedom of expression.\nIt was founded in 2026 in response to community concern about the unprecedented curtailing of the civil liberties of people expressing support for human rights in the Middle East. \nCLDC was established to address a critical gap in the legal system by:\nproviding services to people facing legal issues related to Civil and Political Rights who experience barriers in accessing the legal system or where such services are in the public interest\, and advocating for the protection and promotion of Civil and Political Rights in Australia.
