SUMMARY:Central Coast Screening of The Doctor's Wife
DESCRIPTION:“When you’re a heart surgeon\, that’s what you do… If you are his wife\, you tag along and find something useful to do.” \nThe Doctor’s Wife is a documentary that shows the humanity of everyday Palestinians\, pre 2022\, as told through the eyes of a retired NZ heart surgeon\, his wife and two committed female filmmakers who were told in 2006 that no one cares about old people\, sick Palestinian children or Palestine. While Dr Alan was operating\, Hazel took herself all over the West Bank and Gaza\, volunteering to help in refugee camps\, schools and community centres. \nAfter retiring from a distinguished career as a cardiac surgeon in New Zealand\, Dr Alan Kerr led a Kiwi team to Gaza and the West Bank to operate on children with heart disease. What started as a two-week visit became an enduring 20-year commitment to Palestine\, involving 40 medical missions to Gaza and the West Bank and hundreds of operations. \nAfter the film\, we will hold a talk that traces the history and geography of Palestine from the period before 1948 to the present day\, offering a more in-depth insight into the struggle Palestinians face every day to keep their rich history and culture alive. This includes continuing with Olive harvesting. \nDue to limited venue seating\, we ask that you please bring along your own chair\, bean bag\, or pillow to ensure you have a comfortable spot. \nWe hope you can join us for an afternoon of history\, solidarity and community.

SUMMARY:Sydney launch and exhibition - The Wall of Tears
DESCRIPTION:The Sydney launch of the Wall of Tears is at 7pm\, Friday 9 October 2026\, at the Pitt St Uniting Church\, 264 Pitt St Sydney. Speakers are Chris Sidoti\, international law expert\, Dr Saira Hussain\, volunteer doctor in Gaza\, and Suzan Wahhad from Palestinian Christians in Australia. \nThe Wall of Tears will be on display until 28 October. Please check opening times on the attached flyer. \nThe Wall of Tears by American artist Phil Buehler\, is a heartbreaking memorial to 18\,457 children killed in Gaza. The installation lists the names of children in the order in which they were killed between October 2023 and July 2025. First is Wesam Iyad Mohammed Abu Fsaife\, a 14-year-old boy. Last is Sabah Omar Saad al-Masri\, an eight-year-old girl. \nThese names of two children mark the beginning and end of the Wall of Tears\, a massive art installation measuring 15m by 3m\, which was first unveiled in Brooklyn on 29 January this year\, marking the anniversary of the death of Hind Rajab. The memorial was brought to Western Australia by a group of local doctors keen for their community to bear witness and to remember these innocent children whose lives were cut short by conflict. \nThe rows and rows of names are punctuated by photos and stories of individual children\, drawing on reports by the Guardian and Washington Post newspapers. \n“If you approach from a distance\, it looks like almost an abstract painting and that draws people in to see\, what is that?” according to the artist Phil Buehler. “Then you’ll see they’re names of the children killed in Gaza since 7 October and there are thousands of them stretching down the block. \n“Then you’ll be drawn in further\, I hope\, to see the faces\, read the stories of some of the few dozen I’ve scattered throughout the fence. That’s the part that gets me when I look at it. You see these faces full of joy and hope\, snapshots from graduations and birthday parties and family gatherings and knowing that these kids’ lives were just cut short.” \nThe artist reflects: “You can’t not think about your own kids and your own families. I hope that might lead people to think about how they might help\, even if it’s just\, take a photo of the mural and pass it along on their social media or to their friends.” \nThis is a heartbreaking and powerful work that speaks to our shared humanity\, and we would be honoured to welcome you to experience it.
