June 2023 |APAN book club hosts Dr Areej Sabbagh-Khoury

APAN has begun a book club that meets every 6 weeks in Melbourne, hosted by APAN volunteer library coordinator Mark Furlong. Individuals are invited to share about books that they’ve been reading about Palestine.  In June, the club was delighted to host visiting scholar Dr Sabbagh-Khoury to talk about her new book Colonizing Palestine: The Zionist left and the making of the Palestinian Nakba. Many people including members of Jewish left groups in Melbourne, as well as Palestinians and other allies were enthralled by her presentation.

April-June 2023 | Working with Randwick Council Residents

APAN was contacted by a resident of Randwick in April, decrying the decision by their local Council to fly the Israeli flag. APAN reached out to other people in Randwick and a local action group established, reaching out to the Councilors asking them to rescind the decision.  Greens Councilors sought to move a rescinding motion and residents attending a council meeting in support (see media release).  While the motion was not able to be put to the meeting, in June Labor, Greens and Independent Councillors voted to fly the Palestinian flag on the 29 November 2023.
