Labor affirms intention to recognise Palestine

Today the Labor Party conference affirmed Palestinian rights to self-determination by confirming their intention to recognise Palestine.

“We are closer than ever to Australia having a balanced foreign policy, where Palestinian self-determination is honoured by formal recognition and where Israeli’s blatant disregard for international law is called out” said Nasser Mashni, President of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network.

“Given the Israeli Government’s incitement to violence against Palestinians and further annexation of Palestinian lands we had hoped for a more definitive step towards recognition at this conference” said Mr Mashni “but we do acknowledge that the Government has already made many small steps towards affirming Palestinian rights by shifting our voting in the UN, rescinding Morrison’s decision on Jerusalem, restoring some of the previously axed aid to Palestine and most recently acknowledging the illegality of Israeli occupation” he continued.

“Support for Palestinian human rights has never been stronger both within and outside Labor, and we know that good people will continue to fight alongside us until the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination are fulfilled”.
