James Macdonald, Greens candidate for Kingsford Smith

Party position on the Question of Palestine
September 2013 Federal Election, Kingsford Smith electorate, New South Wales

Thanks for writing to me on this issue, which is very close to my heart, and one that I’m glad to see get some attention.

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you of the shocking reality facing Palestinians every day – indefinite detention without due process, the torture of children, the destruction of homes, the theft of land. All of these concern me deeply.

The majority of your questions relate to a political solution for the crisis in the Middle East. While I think that the creation of a Palestinian Sate along the 1967 borders is a worthy goal, my first personal concern is full equality, justice and human rights for all those who live in the region.

I believe that my party’s stance is most eloquently articulated by NSW MLC David Shoebridge, in his speech on one-sided MP visits to Israel and in his principled calls to end the violence and blockade of Gaza during Operation Pillar of Defense.

If elected, I intend to fully support the efforts to restore human rights to Palestinians.

I hope this answers your questions satisfactorily.

If not, please let me know and I’ll be more specific.

Regards,

James Macdonald.
