Party positions on the Question of Palestine
September 2013 Federal Election, Cowper electorate, New South Wales
Thank you for your email. The Coalition opposed recognition of Palestine’s observer status at the United Nations in November 2012, believing it to be an attempt by Palestinian leaders to gain access to the international courts and risking conferring international recognition on the militant group, Hamas. We believed that such actions would only escalate and prolong the conflict.
The Coalition is a strong supporter of Australia’s Jewish community and is firmly committed to Israel’s security. We recognise that Israel is under existential threat in a way that almost no other country in the world is and we recognise the potential for closer trade and investment ties with Israel.
The Coalition supports the two-state solution and the right of the Israeli and Palestinian peoples to live in peace and security within internationally recognised borders. The path to peace is for the Palestinian leadership to officially recognise Israel’s right to exist, return to the negotiating table and to renounce all forms of violence including missile, mortar and other attacks. We support the resumption of negotiations on both sides.
