Expose the risks, stop the funding: No more complicity in genocide

The Genocide Risk Reporting Bill 2024 is one of the three bills that form the Red Lines Package.

What is it?

If passed as law, it would make defence-related businesses and government agencies involved in weapons manufacturing assess and report on the risks of genocide in their supply chains and operations.

Think of it as a stronger version of the Modern Slavery Act, with tougher penalties for companies that try to hide risky activities.

The bill in action

✔ Requires defence businesses to report on genocide risks in their supply chains

✔ Establishes an independent Anti-Genocide Commissioner and other mechanisms to enforce compliance

✔ Introduces penalties for companies that ignore genocide risks

Why does it matter?

➤ Since 7 October 2023, the Australian Government has invested $22 billion into companies flagged by the United Nations for transferring arms and munitions to Israel, including Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, and Rheinmetall Defence.

➤ Right now, there is no public framework to assess whether these companies should receive public funds or whether they contribute to Australia violating its mandatory obligation to prevent genocide.

➤ This bill ensures transparency and accountability, aligning Australia with global efforts to prevent genocide and stopping taxpayer funds from enabling human rights violations.
