As Israel’s genocide in Gaza continues, Australia has extended a state invitation to Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded in 2025 that President Herzog had incited the commission of genocide.
President Herzog’s words were also referenced by the International Court of Justice in its January 2024 provisional ruling, highlighting that Herzog’s words had contributed to a pattern of rhetoric indicative of genocidal intent.
Inviting a leader accused of inciting genocide is unacceptable. Australia must not normalise the crime of genocide with diplomatic honour.
Australia must take its international obligations seriously and hold Israel to account for its genocide.
Demand Australia holds Israel to account.

Australia has international legal obligations to not normalise Israel’s genocide through diplomacy.
Australia is a signatory to the Genocide Convention, which means we have obligations to take actions to prevent genocide.
International law obliges Australia to use all means reasonably available to it to prevent and punish genocide.
This must include:
- Imposing country-level sanctions on Israel and sanctions on Israeli officials and entities complicit in genocide.
- Imposing a two-way arms embargo, ending the direct and indirect import and export of weapons and components.
- Cutting off economic, industry, trade, diplomatic and military relationships between Australia and Israel.
- Proactively supporting the ICJ and ICC investigations into genocide and war crimes.
- Prohibiting investment from Australian institutions into companies complicit in Israel’s occupation and genocide.
- Rejecting any framework that conditions Palestinian self-determination on Israeli security.
Instead, Australia has chosen to invite the President of Israel to Australia on a state visit.
